Casting Non-Ferrous Metals

Colleagues must demonstrate, thorough practical activities, their capability in using the process of sand casting non-
ferrous metals, and their knowledge and understanding of:
1. The types, parts and functions of furnaces, crucibles and other casting equipment, particularly the controls, safety devices;
maintenance and the detection of defects
2. The use of correct personal protection for eyes, face, body, legs and feet
3. Lighting, loading, ventilation, pouring and shutdown procedures
4. The importance of pre-heating metal and equipment
5. The dangers of moisture, impurities, scrap, thermal shock, toxic fumes from zinc and magnesium, dangers of polystyrene
patterns
6. Safe use of sand-bed for pouring, organisation of the pouring area, operator and onlookers
7. The importance of emptying crucibles, using pyrometers, safe disposal of dross, weighting of moulding boxes
