Milling Machines

Colleagues must be able to demonstrate, thorough practical activities, their capability in using the horizontal
and vertical milling machines, including computer control machines and machining centres, and their
knowledge and understanding of:
1. The parts and functions of the types of milling machines and machining centres commonly used in school
workshops, their stop, start and drive controls
2. Appropriate maintenance procedures
3. The types of milling cutters and their correct mounting and removal and their appropriateness for various tasks
4. The secure holding of materials during milling to include irregular shaped components and correct guarding
during milling operations
5. The correct speeds and feeds and their effect on the cutting process, including the appropriate use of coolants

6. The safe working practices in the school workshop when using this machine with learners
7. The particular aspects of the safe use of computer controlled machining
